Bloods

2 August2 September 2012

From 2 August – 2 September, Chapter House Lane will exhibit new works by Australian artist Andrew Gordon, who lives and works on the southern coast of Victoria. The show opening runs from 6-8pm, Thursday 2 August.

Inspired by the world of sports, Gordon’s recent work has featured portraits of Australian footballers and other athletes. In his upcoming series ‘Bloods’, Gordon concocts representations of sportsmen, recalling his youthful awe and admiration of their agility. In particular, 1990s NBA basketball players and AFL footballers influence his work, as he pieces together the intrigue of their imagined personas.

Work on the series commenced at a recent month long residency at Art Park in Byron Bay. His ideas developed around the traditional use of flags at sporting events, be they national, or team-themed. From a time when these were made at home, rather than bought at the game, he constructs his backdrops to large oil paintings from hand dyed material and salvaged remnants from everyday life.
