Helen Johnson is a visual artist, writer and occasional curator with a particular interest in the functions and possibilities of painting in a contemporary context. She is currently working towards a PhD at Monash University.

Recent exhibitions include Air to Surface (with Parker Ito) Curated by Liv Barrett at Prism, Los Angeles 2013, Meantime at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne 2013, Chinatown: the sequel curated by Liv Barrett at LTD, Los Angeles, 2012; Dead Metaphor at ACME Project Space, London, 2012; System Preferences at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2011; Universal Remote at Y3K Gallery, Melbourne, 2011; An Effort of Memory at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, Melbourne, 2011.

Recent publications include ‘Scott Mitchell: A silent modification of the specific present’ for Un Magazine, Autumn 2012; ‘Mira Gojak: A moment an immeasurable whole’ for Discipline, Issue #2, Autumn 2012 and a review of ‘The Power of Judgment: A Debate on Aesthetic Critique’ for Discipline, Issue #1, Winter 2011.

Recently curated exhibitions include Love in the mourning at Death be Kind, Melbourne, 2011 and New World Records (with Nick Mangan) at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2009. Helen has undertaken residencies at Nordisk Kunstnarsenter Dalsasen, Norway; Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder, Norway and Kunstlerhaus Dortmund, Germany and is currently represented by Sutton Gallery.
