Nick Breedon

A Whole New World

6 June1 July 2013

Chapter House Lane invites you to the opening of Breedon’s exhibition ‘A Whole New World’ from 6-8pm, Thursday 6 June. In keeping with her exploration of traditional techniques such as wood carving and foundry work, Breedon uses tapestry weaving in their new work. The result is a spectacular clash of pop and Persia.

With a title taken from the 1992 animated Disney film Aladdin the work cleverly combines the concept of a magic carpet with the Magic Eye images of the popular book series. After calculating a series of complex equations and trial warp setts, Breedon has reproduced an autostereogram pattern – a 2D picture that on prolonged viewing with diverged eyes reveals a 3D image.

The work commenced development during a residency at the Australian Tapestry Workshop’s Artist In Residence program and continued on a large loom in Breedon’s studio. The ambitious piece follows on from a large-scale pyrotechnic text work Let’s Get Metaphysical, set ablaze at last year’s Splendour in the Grass festival.

A graduate of the VCA, Breedon has shown at Next Wave Festival, Casula Powerhouse and Dianne Tanzer Gallery. Their reputation grows as she uncovers paradoxical relationships between objects and images, drawing connections through comparisons of colour, pattern, symbolism and literary quirks.
